Severe Attacks Lead to Withdrawal of Vasil Terziev’s Candidacy for Mayor of Sofia

The withdrawal of Vasil Terziev’s candidacy for mayor of Sofia is coming in the coming days, and the reason is severe attacks by structures and sympathizers of “Yes, Bulgaria” and DSB, “Trud news” reports, citing activists of both structures. At the headquarters of the parties, headed by Hristo Ivanov and Atanas Atanasov, letters against the candidacy arrived every day, in which right-wing voters explained why they could not vote for Terziev. In the letters, it was recalled that the grandfather Vasil and his brother Todor were not just from the DS, but personified the obscurantism of the State Security.

In addition to being generals from the DS, Todor Terziev is also a long-time party secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Vasil Terziev in the Central Control and Revision Commission of the BKP. The father of the candidate for mayor of the PPDB was an officer of the First Main Directorate of the DS.

DB sympathizers warned the party’s leadership that it would be like in 2005, when the SDS nominated Minko Gerdzhikov in the by-elections for mayor of the capital. After shining a light on the DS about Gerdzhikov’s past, who turned out to be a full-time employee of the First Main Directorate of the DS, he managed to collect under 7% support. “Now Terziev won’t even get 5%”, party members warned Hristo Ivanov. Others recalled that their parents were repressed by the likes of Terziev’s grandfathers and voting for him would be a joke with their memory.

Ivanov and Atanasov were ambiguously told that this time they would pay for the loss of the vote in Sofia with their resignations. Members of the DSB say that the justification for Vasil Terziev’s candidacy was “We continue the change”.

In fact, Terziev is a personal candidacy of Kiril Petkov, who, even after the revelations about the DS past of his family, continued to firmly stand behind Terziev, who was one of the most generous sponsors of “We continue the change”. He and his partner from Telerik Svetozar Georgiev donated BGN 80,000 to PP for the first election campaign. For the second, Svetozar Georgiev donated BGN 100,000, and Vasil Terziev – BGN 50,000.

Activists of DSB proposed, in order to avoid confusion with Vasil Terziev’s candidacy, that he be offered to head the Public Council for Sofia on a voluntary basis, which would become an incubator of ideas for the development of the capital.

There was an option to think about a broader center-right candidacy, and with the proposal for such a refusal by Terziev, it was expected to pass as a minor failure.

Boris Bonev already explained that he would not mind if he was the new candidate. In an interview with BNR, Bonev admitted that they underestimated “the scope and effect of the attack against the PPDB and “Save Sofia” candidate for mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, because of the affiliation of his father, grandfather and other relatives to the DS.”
