The Decline of Cuneo Levaldigi Airport: Comparing Passenger Numbers from 2014 to 2023

How long gone are the times of the almost 240,000 passengers in transit from Cuneo Levaldigi airport.

We have tried to analyze two decades of movements and users for the Cuneo airport, from 2013 to today, with the main reference being the year in which the Granda airport recorded the highest number of passengers, 2014, when 237,432 people chose Levaldigi as their destination or departure for your own journey.

The numbers that emerge are merciless.

Let’s start by comparing the last month for which data is available this season: May.

In 2023 there were 594 movements with 25,426 passengers, in the same month of 2013 there were 367 movements with 7,975 passengers. This is the only positive datum recorded, as the following year the May movements rose to 631 even with a slightly lower number of passengers than the current ones (21,087).

It was the summer months that made the airport take off strongly in 2014. July had 25,576 passengers registered, rising to 30,123 in August.

Numbers difficult to reach in the next two months, considering the destinations offered.

The boom year from Levaldigi we flew to Alghero, Trapani and Cagliari with Ryanair (which recorded 400,000 passengers in transit at the airport from the day it opened in the Cuneo area), as well as Tirana with Livingstone, Marrakech with Jetairfly Maroc, Bucharest and Bacau with Blue Air and the summer routes to Rhodes, Palma de Mallorca and Menorca operated by I Viaggi del Turchese and Mostar (Medjugorje) with Mistralair. Most flights were biweekly, some even longer.

Today from Levaldigi you can only reach Cagliari and Palermo with Ryanair twice a week and the very interesting Casablanca in Morocco, the only destination with a daily flight except for Sundays.

To these routes will be added the exclusive destinations of Saint-Tropez and Figari from 28 July to the end of August, which are so “in”, but which we doubt will be able to record significant numbers (also in consideration of the aircraft used, 8-seater turboprops). But this is not the purpose of the two future operations.

Unfortunately, they have already said from the airport that, at the moment, no other destination is planned.

And so we just have to compare the first 5 months of 2023, comparing them to the “fabulous” season of 2014.

From January to May of this year, Levaldigi recorded 1,103 movements, with 46,036 passengers. The same period of 2014 the movements were 2,372 and 85,999 passengers.

In a nutshell, 1,269 movements were lost (almost half compared to 2014), but above all 39,963 passengers, 53% fewer users.

Cold numbers which, if on the one hand they don’t want to question the usefulness of the airport on the other, make us reflect on its current use.

Is it really time to rethink its use?
