EA Sports FC 24: Controversial Cover Artwork and Missing Superstars

After it was not possible to agree on the license fee with the Fifa association, the history of the “FIFA” game series ended with “FIFA 23”. Instead, EA now sails under its own flag. “EA Sports FC 24” will be released in September, but the first reactions are already there – albeit unwanted ones.

In any case, the published cover artwork of the “Ultimate Edition” triggered malice and involuntary laughter. In the eyes of the community, some of the kickers shown are so badly hit that users ask themselves: Who is that supposed to be?

You can see a fictitious group photo on which football legends from today and from the past are gathered. With some of the more than 30 players, however, it takes a lot of imagination to recognize them. Instead of being photorealistic, some soccer stars appear like caricatures – or “Sims” characters.

From A like Alexandra Popp to Z like Zidane

An example from German sports history, represented on the cover but difficult to identify: Rudi Völler. “Tante Käthe” seems like a mixture of Super Mario and Wolfgang Petry.

Pele, Zinedine Zidane, Andrea Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Didier Drogba and David Beckham are other iconic players immortalized in the group photo. From more recent times and placed prominently in the middle of the picture: Erling Haaland. A total of 21 men and 10 players (including Alexandra Popp) can be seen in the group photo. Users on Twitter, among other things, make fun of the inaccurate portraits. A number of memes with the cover stars are already in circulation.

“Pirlo has seen things,” tweets one user – and another writes “Pirlo is lost”. Both refer to the Italian’s supposedly frightened facial expression. Another replaced the cover artwork with a group photo from The Sims 4 and captioned it “I see no difference” to symbolize the lack of realism in the depiction.

Even more irritating than the portraits themselves is the absence of two superstars: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are nowhere to be found on the cover shot.
