Around 150 bands, solo artists and DJs will be performing on the ten stages at this year’s Breminale. We name five musical acts you shouldn’t miss.

Whether it’s alternative rock, jazz pop or ravepunk – visitors to the Breminale will get their money’s worth this year too. Around 150 bands, solo artists and DJs perform from Wednesday to Sunday on the ten large and small stages on the Osterdeich. And even for music connoisseurs, the festival has one or two surprises in store. We name five musical acts you shouldn’t miss.

1 Get Jealous (Wednesday, 9pm, high tide)

It’s wonderful when a young, almost unknown band meets an unsuspecting audience – and after a few minutes has them completely in their hands and in ecstasy. That’s what happened almost two years ago in the Oldenburg club Cadillac, when the alternative pop skate punk trio hadn’t been touring the best stages in the country for long and still had to earn their reputation as a first-class live band. Otto on microphone and guitar, Marike on bass and Marek on drums have done it effortlessly since then, even at several concerts in Bremen – and this reputation will certainly not suffer at the Breminale, on the contrary.

2 Pony Tyler (Wednesday, 10 p.m., Pappinale)

Anyone can sing. In the shower, on the bike, in the car, in the karaoke bar — sometimes euphonious, mostly off-key. Singing together with numerous other people – that can be done in the stadium, at a live concert or in a civilized choir. And then there’s mass karaoke. But what Pony Tyler do isn’t just singing and reading lyrics together. It’s chaotic, emotional, loud and sporty.

To determine which song is to be sung, two volunteers from the audience duel on two fixed Goldsprint bikes. They ride a virtual 250-meter route — the winner gets to choose the song. The whole thing is moderated by unicorn fans in Power Rangers costumes, who sing just as wrong as the rest. And then hundreds of people belt out oldies, pop tearjerkers or punk classics. Intoxicating. You have to be there to understand it.

3 Rausz (Thursday, 8 p.m., boards)

The dictionary definition of “stage presence” is: “The way in which a person performs in front of an audience and the effect/characteristic it achieves.” But there could also simply be a picture of Rausz singer Susanna. She is present like hardly any other frontwoman: she dances, rages, squirms, freaks out, sings and screams – an experience. Together with her there are great musicians on stage, who play a really alternative mix of rock, punk, grunge and also pop. Worth seeing and hearing. From Bremen, by the way, once again in the Breminale program – and quite rightly so.

4 Burnout East West (Friday, 10:15 p.m., high tide)

The lightning debut was released without the Bremen band having ever played a concert. The first record was quickly followed by other releases. Felix Büttner (from the band Jedertag) and Hannes Gehring (Team Scheisse) banged out smashing songs without end. All without thinking too much about where this is going. In the atmosphere of the Horner Eck neighborhood pub, the two musicians just got going. They made. Keep going. What? Ravepunk or electropunk fits the description quite well.

The songs are characterized by synth bangers, wild guitar riffs and lyrics with a big shout-along factor. All with a large dose of irony. How else do song titles like “I don’t want to have a bad conscience when I order ten sausages” or “My militancy, my eco-balance”? The two Bremen musicians now play at festivals such as Fusion, Appletree and the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. And if you manage to get 50 people dancing in a bar or 2,000 in a tent, you can certainly do it at the Breminale.

5 Teresa Bergman (Sunday, 7 p.m., Radio Bremen stage)

With a lot of humor, the New Zealand musician Teresa Bergman deals with things that sometimes don’t go that way in life. The genre changer called her current album “33, Single & Broke” and packs partly bitter, partly ironic lyrics about broken hearts, lost loved ones and empty bank accounts into skilfully arranged jazz-pop songs.

Vocally, the Berliner-by-choice performs extraordinary pirouettes: instead of simple tones, she prefers to choose difficult melodies. She’s also an artist who seems drugged live – her studio recordings already have energy, but on stage she goes up a notch.
