Montreal-New York Train Service Delayed until Mid-September Due to Canadian National (CN) Heat Restrictions

The Montreal-New York train will not resume service until mid-September, due to Canadian National (CN) heat restrictions.

“Amtrak has been exploring various options with Canadian National (CN) and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to resume Adirondack service to and from Montreal. […] Unfortunately, Amtrak, CN and NYSDOT have not found a workable solution for this summer that would not result in our customers experiencing significant delays of up to four hours or even potentially getting stuck mid-trip,” said explained Jason Abrams, spokesperson for Amtrak by email.

As such, Adirondack service will be limited between New York City and Saratoga starting July 24 until mid-September when CN is expected to lift its heat restrictions.

Note that the connection between Montreal and New York was reinstated last April after being interrupted due to the pandemic. However, the fun was only short-lived as the service was shut down again at the end of June after CN introduced restrictions forcing the train to run at speeds ranging from 10 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour, or between 16 km/h and 65 km/h.

These restrictions would then cause excessive delays given that the trip normally takes 11 hours when there are no pitfalls.

“It is possible that the heat restrictions will be lifted before if the local temperature drops, and Amtrak, with the support of our partners, could then restore service sooner than expected. We will also work with CN and NYSDOT to develop a long-term solution so that Amtrak trains can run to and from Montreal over the coming summers,” concluded Mr. Abrams.
