More than a quarter of those who work spend the entire day, or almost, behind a screen. This is certainly the case with administrative staff and managers.
To gain insight into the required skills for a job, Statbel, the Belgian statistics agency, asked 17,800 people between 15 and 74 with a job how much working time they spend per type of task. 25.8 percent spend almost all of their time working with a computer, tablet or smartphone. As expected, the Information and Communications sector is the place of choice where about 80 percent of employees almost always work with digital devices. The percentage is also high among people with a job in the financial and insurance sector.
There are also fewer screen-oriented jobs. For 15.9 percent, for example, the working day mainly consists of verbal communication with people outside the company and for 13.9 percent it consists of talking to colleagues within the company. 11.7 percent perform heavy physical labor almost all the time. This strenuous physical effort is mainly made by skilled farmers, foresters and fishermen, people with basic occupations, craftsmen and in the construction, administrative and support services and agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors. After all, 7.8 percent spend almost all of their time advising, training or teaching other people.
Looking at the tasks themselves, 13.4 percent of the respondents have a job that includes a lot of repetitive tasks and 13.9 percent are given tasks that are described in strict procedures. The self-employed, especially those who work with staff, experience by far the greatest degree of autonomy: they can influence the order in which they perform tasks or how they complete them. Among white-collar workers in the private sector, only 20.2 percent experience a great deal of freedom, for statutory civil servants this is 21 percent and for contractual employees 18.2 percent. Only 8.4 percent of workers experience a high degree of autonomy in their job.
