Melanomas are more deadly for black men than for white men, new research shows. You can recognize this form of skin cancer by a spot on the skin or a mole that changes.
It was already known that men are generally more at risk of melanoma than women and that they die more often from it. But new research now shows that skin color also makes a difference, according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology published study.
Although melanoma is much more common in white men, black men are 26 percent more likely to die from it. They are more likely to get melanomas in unexpected places, such as under their fingernails and on the bottoms of their feet.
As a result, the disease is often diagnosed later and they have a greater chance of a poor outcome. In white men, melanomas are more common on their trunk, head or neck.
A melanoma often arises from ‘unblemished’ skin, but it can also arise from an existing birthmark. Melanoma metastasizes faster than other forms of skin cancer because it is an aggressive form of skin cancer.
