Supermarket deliverers have too much to do with unhealthy and unsafe conditions in their work. Grocery crates are often heavy and often have to be lifted above the shoulders. With refrigerated products, there is a risk of contact with the refrigerant dry ice in the vans. And home delivery also creates unsafe traffic situations on the street, especially in the evenings.

This is the conclusion of the Dutch Labor Inspectorate after inspections at five large supermarket delivery companies. According to the Labor Inspectorate, the supermarket companies pay too little attention to the insecurity and dangers and have received a warning. The Labor Inspectorate says it will check the companies again later this year, and if violations are found again, the companies can be fined.

The home delivery of groceries from the supermarkets has grown strongly in recent years. Most of the larger supermarket chains do it, such as AH, Jumbo, Plus, Coop, Hoogvliet and Spar, and online supermarket Picnic is also active. The Labor Inspectorate does not say which five supermarket deliverers were checked.

The companies conclude that they pay too little attention to the physical strain on the deliverers. For example, the shopping crates are often heavy, between 10 and 15 kilos, sometimes exceeding 20 kilos. The crates also have to be lifted and turned, often above the shoulders, which exacerbates the load. The layout and loading of the vans must be adjusted by the Labor Inspectorate.

Road safety during delivery is also a concern. Narrow streets, crossing the street with the crates and traffic on the road result in dangerous situations, especially when it is dusk or dark.
