Victor Wembanyama’s Summer League Debut Breaks Records, Ranks Second in History

We know it since yesterday, Victor Wembanyama will no longer play in the Summer League this summer. But we were still able to witness his great debut last weekend, great debuts which were obviously highly anticipated by the basketball world. The proof in numbers.

1.39 million viewers on average on ESPNpeaking at 1.63 million.

Here are the numbers from Sports Media Watch (SMW) regarding Victor Wembanyama’s Summer League debut last Friday against the Hornets.

Victor Wembanyama’s debut is second-most watched #NBASummerLeague game on record, trailing only Zion Williamson’s earthquake-shortened debut in 2019.

By average number of viewers, it is quite simply the second most-watched Summer League game in history if we are to believe the figures of SMW. The ultimate record? It was established during the meeting between the Pelicans and the Knicks (1.61 million) in the 2019 Summer League. A match which corresponded to the great debut of Zion Williamson – another phenomenon – and which had been interrupted in particular because of ‘an earthquake.

For those wondering how many viewers watched LeBron James’ 2003 premiere, no stats are available because it wasn’t measured at the time.

Friday’s @spurs vs. @hornets game on ESPN is the second-most watched Summer League game ever.

Fun fact: Victor Wembanyama’s Summer League debut drew more viewers than the Spurs-Warriors matchup at the Alamodome last regular season, the only nationally broadcast for San Antonio. We call it the Wemby effect, which will clearly make Spurs one of the most watched franchises in the NBA next season.
