For the first time, extreme heavy rain was observed in the metropolitan area, and an emergency disaster text message from the Korea Meteorological Administration was sent to Guro-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul and Singil-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, at 4:00 pm today.
Around 3:30 p.m., more than 72mm of rain fell in Guro-gu, Geumcheon-gu, and Dongjak-gu in Seoul for an hour, reaching the Korea Meteorological Administration’s standard for extreme heavy rain.
The Korea Meteorological Administration defines extreme heavy rain as when an hourly cumulative precipitation of 50mm or more and a three-hour cumulative precipitation of 90mm or more are observed at the same time.
However, when the accumulated precipitation for one hour exceeds 72mm, it is immediately judged as extreme heavy rain.
When extreme heavy rain is observed in the metropolitan area, the Korea Meteorological Administration directly sends an emergency disaster text message with a warning sound of 40 dB or higher.
Areas where heavy rain fell during the previous hour include 72mm in Sindaebang-dong, Dongjak-gu, Seoul, 70mm in U-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan, 64mm in Doksan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, 60mm in Punggok-ri, Gochon-eup, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do, and 56mm in Namhyeon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
In these areas, you should refrain from going out as much as possible, as water may suddenly rise and cause inundation damage, or nearby rivers may overflow.
It is recommended to call 119 for help if needed.
Also, since nearby slopes may collapse, in dangerous areas, you should contact the local government to find out how to evacuate in advance.
