This will be the second NATO summit held since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and it is expected that Ukraine-related issues will be at the top of the meeting’s agenda.
Portal “Delfi” has already presented three main topics that deserve special attention in 11-12. during the Vilnius summit in July. You can learn more about them here.
Along with questions about support for Ukraine and NATO’s future relationship with Kyiv, the allies will discuss the alliance’s defense plans. Also, the issue of Sweden’s admission to NATO, which has been delayed by Turkey’s claims for more than a year, is still relevant.
The topic of resources devoted to defense has caused a long-lasting headache in NATO circles. Currently, only about a third of the alliance’s member states spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, or the amount that NATO itself has defined as optimal.
Defense spending is expected to be one of the topics discussed at the Vilnius summit as well. As the media “Euractiv” notes, NATO will consider the possibility of establishing new defense spending commitments. NATO members are expected to commit to spending at least 2% of GDP on defense and will continue to increase spending beyond that point.
