After talks with Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, the NATO Secretary General announced in Vilnius that Turkey has agreed to move forward on this issue. “This is a historic day,” Stoltenberg added.

“President Erdogan has agreed to forward Sweden’s accession protocol to the Turkish National Assembly as soon as possible and to work closely with the assembly to ensure ratification,” Stoltenberg said.
Even before going to the NATO summit in Vilnius on Monday, Erdogan announced that he will support Sweden’s admission to NATO if the European Union resumes the long-frozen accession talks with Ankara.
CONTEXT:
Finland and Sweden refrained from joining NATO for a long time. However, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine radically changed the security situation in Europe, and support for NATO membership among politicians and the public in both countries rapidly increased. On May 18, 2022, both Finland and Sweden submitted applications for NATO membership.
Finland officially became a member of NATO, but Sweden’s application has not yet been approved by Turkey and Hungary. Erdogan blocked Sweden’s admission, accusing Stockholm of harboring what Ankara considers terrorists, particularly fighters from the Kurdish separatist armed group the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
