An action at the Aristides Maltez Hospital (HAM), in Brotas, will help detect head and neck cancer on the 22nd.

The task force will involve a multidisciplinary team, with professionals from the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Speech Therapy, Department of Dentistry and Department of Psychology and will select

100 people for treatment. The action will also distribute explanatory pamphlets.

The screening is part of the Green July program, created by the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery, with the aim of informing the population and primary care professionals about the importance of preventing head and neck cancer and promoting measures that help in prevention. , early diagnosis and treatment.

The work will be in partnership with the Boca e Throat Cancer Association (a non-profit non-governmental organization that works on behalf of mouth and throat cancer patients and their families throughout Brazil).

According to doctor Lucas Gomes Silva, head of the Head and Neck department at HAM, in Brazil this type of disease is the sixth leading cause of death from cancer. “It is a highly prevalent type of cancer, especially in countries with low socioeconomic status, and we need to alert the population about the risks and how to prevent it”, he explains.

It is estimated that around 41,000 new cases of head and neck cancer arise annually in the country, according to the National Cancer Institute (Inca).
