Introducing the Cine Senior Program: Enhancing Access to Cinema for the Elderly

Tomorrow the Cine Senior program will begin at the Marina Cinema in Ceuta, an initiative that will allow people over 65 to enjoy the cinema for only 2 euros. This measure, promoted by the Government and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, aims to encourage a return to theaters and promote the importance of the cinematographic experience in society.

The Senior Cinema program is part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and has a budget of 10 million euros financed by the 2023 General State Budget. This initiative seeks to facilitate access to culture and promote the transition towards new digital environment, allowing older people to enjoy cinema as a social and emotional practice.

People aged 65 and over are the age group that has experienced the longest delay in resuming movie-going habits since the start of the pandemic. The measure seeks to encourage the participation of this segment of the population, which has shown a lower frequency of attendance compared to other age groups.

Cinema is one of the cultural sectors most affected by the pandemic, and despite the upturns experienced in 2022, attendance at theaters has not yet fully recovered. The measure of the Cine Senior program is added to the direct aid to theaters implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Sports to counteract the effects of COVID-19. In 2022, more than 10 million euros were allocated to 232 companies and entities, benefiting a total of 476 exhibition halls throughout the country.

With this initiative, it seeks not only to boost the activity of the film sector, but also to promote access to culture and social participation of the elderly. Cinema, as a form of entertainment and artistic expression, arouses emotions and creates shared experiences, and the Senior Cinema program seeks to recover that illusion in the public over 65 years of age.

The measure is part of a “broader strategy to strengthen the cultural sector and ensure that access to culture is inclusive and accessible to all citizens.”
