As expected, the current head of state Shavkats Mirziyoyev won the presidential election of Uzbekistan, who will remain in this position for a third term until 2030, according to the results of the vote count announced on Monday.
Mirziyojev, who faced formal competition from three other little-known candidates, won 87% of the votes, according to the results announced by the election commission.
Early presidential elections were announced after a referendum held at the end of April approved a new version of the constitution, which provides for greater rights for citizens, but also extends the term of office of the president from five to seven years and allows Mirziyoyev to run for two more terms and remain as head of state. until 2037.
Mirziyojev became the head of state in 2016 after the death of the long-time authoritarian president Islam Karimov. Until then, he was prime minister for 13 years.
During his presidency, Mirziyoyev implemented extensive economic and social reforms, modernizing Uzbekistan and promoting economic development. After Mirziyoyev came to power, political prisoners were released, the media can operate more freely.
However, political opposition is still not allowed in the country. The same five political forces as under Karimov are still represented in the parliament, and none of them are in real opposition. In the assessment of OSCE observers, the procedure for registering new parties is cumbersome, and no opposition party has managed to be registered.
