Gregg Popovich will follow the San Antonio Spurs. The 74-year-old veteran coach shortened the length of his relationship with the team where Argentines Manu Ginóbili and Fabricio Oberto shone and continues in the NBA. In addition, he will be the highest paid coach in NBA history.
Popovich signed a five-year contract to continue as coach and also as team president, the Spurs announced. After selecting Victor Wembanyama number one in the Draft last month, it became more than clear that the five-time champion coach would remain in San Antonio.
The Spurs announced the renewal of Popovich in a statement on Saturday without giving details of the remuneration for their coach, who is also president of basketball operations. However, Adrian Wojnarowski, one of the most well-informed journalists in the league, revealed that Popovich will earn more than $80 million in total, which is more than the $78.5 million for six years that Monty Williams recently signed with the Detroit Pistons.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s new five-year deal is worth more than $80 million, sources tell ESPN. His deal resets the coaching market after Monty Williams’ recent six-year, $78.5 million deal with Detroit.

Popovich arrived as San Antonio’s coach in December 1996. He has 1,336 wins, 31 more than Don Nelson, who was the wins leader before Popovich surpassed him. He is third in playoff wins with 170, behind Phil Jackson (229) and Pat Riley (171).
He is also one of five coaches with at least five titles. Jackson has 11 (between Chicago Bulls -6- and Lakers), Red Auberbach nine (with Boston Celtics), Popovich shares five with Riley and John Kundla.
Next month he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
“His ability to connect and spend time and jump between developing player basketball and the bigger picture of developing people is incredible,” Spurs president and owner Peter J. Holt said last May.
“No matter what Pop does, he’s going to find a way to do it because that’s the way he is. I am excited to see the next phase of his journey, ”he added.
Before the Spurs’ final game last season, Popovich claimed he had been a “lucky beneficiary” in his career — and that was even before San Antonio won the lottery and the chance to draft Wembanyama to follow in David’s footsteps. Robinson and Tim Duncan, who became key players on the team after being drafted first.
But with the departure of Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs haven’t won a postseason series since 2017. Those issues, as well as Popovich’s advanced age, led to speculation about his possible retirement. But he carries on with his remarkable career.
