Experts have warned of the negative effects of high temperatures during the summer season on the effect of medicines and on the body’s response to them.
In order to avoid the serious consequences of this, the Consumer Advice Center in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia recommended that people with chronic diseases in particular – who take medications regularly – consult the attending physician regarding adjusting the drug dose during severe heat waves.
The center indicated that some medications make the skin more sensitive to sunlight in what is known as photosensitivity, which increases the risk of sunburn or leads to strong skin reactions.
These medications include antibiotics, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatories, such as diclofenac and ibuprofen.
The center also warned that taking diuretics can lead to dehydration, especially in the case of excessive sweating and not drinking enough fluids.
For its part, the German Heart Foundation warned that extreme heat could exacerbate the body’s reaction to medications for high blood pressure, and therefore people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular problems could be exposed to a sudden drop in blood pressure or a collapse of the cycle. haemorrhage or sunstroke.
In general, during the summer, medicines should be kept in a cool, dry and dark place, taking into account adequate fluid intake, staying in the shade, and avoiding strenuous activities and psychological stress as much as possible.
