The Chcimirs: A Controversial Comic Allegory of the Ukrainian War

NETWORK MONITORING “They want to release the Chcimirs three times a day.” Twitter and Facebook supporters of the Ukrainian war effort are excited by a comic that is making the rounds on the Internet. Opponents of arms deliveries and advocates of a peaceful solution to the conflict are depicted in it as those who want to negotiate with a shark eating an innocent victim. Some would like to broadcast the video in schools and workplaces. They ask if doctors could prescribe it as a medicine.

An animated video in Polish showing a man being held in the mouth by a shark about to eat him is spreading across the Internet. It is supposed to be an allegory for the war in Ukraine mocking the supporters of a peaceful solution who criticize the supply of weapons to this conflict. “Hang on buddy, I’ll help you right away,” a cartoon character standing on the shore a short distance away assures the unfortunate victim of a shark attack. “Faster, he’s going to eat me in a minute,” urges the victim. “Sorry. I can’t. I’m afraid that this will only intensify the conflict between you,” the bystander apologizes. “What the hell… At least give me a gun for self-defense,” the victim demands.

Another cartoon character is then inserted into the debate: “No way! You may not arm it. That will prolong the conflict.” “God, somebody kill that monster before it eats me,” pleads the human whose body is poking out of the predator’s mouth. However, the onlookers do not understand the victim’s cries. “That you are not ashamed! In order to achieve peace, both sides must start acting,” we learn. “Where’s the proof that you didn’t want to attack the shark first,” even asks one character representing those who question Ukraine’s interpretation of the current war. In the comic, there is also a character resembling the Pope. “Enough! Enough bloodshed. I call you to peace. So embrace each other and take it easy,” the cleric urges on both sides of the ongoing shark attack.

“Looks like the only way out for you is the peace plan,” another bystander tells the enslaved human. The desperate victim, trying to save his life, signs the presented document. However, when she is reluctant to sacrifice her limbs in order to achieve peace, she is accused of prolonging the conflict. At the end of the video, when the attacked person is left with only a pool of blood, we hear the onlookers sigh: “Well… We tried…”

The video, which was accompanied by Czech subtitles, excited many local supporters of the Ukrainian war. They want to release it to supporters of peace negotiations with Russia, whom they mockingly call “chcimirs.” The comic currently has over 3,000 shares on Facebook. In the comments, we read from the supporters of Ukraine, among other things, that the shark is a “thinking creature, unlike the Russian Mongolian mobs”.

The comic was shared, for example, by traveler Dan Přibáň, who commented on it with the words: “Chcimířes help and seek the truth…”

“And could it be broadcast in schools and workplaces? And all the way around?! And could doctors prescribe it as medicine?” one Twitter user gushes over the video.

Publicist and TOP 09 member Igor Adamovič, however, has doubts about whether the video described above will reach the target group. “Exactly. Almost funny. But ineffective – with a closed eye and a blocked ear, they will not see and will not hear,” he lamented on Twitter.

“Jeez, this is great. I will immediately send it to my colleagues who are unfortunately on the other side. But they won’t like it, they will recognize themselves in it. So there will be a debate about black people in the USA and the war in Yemen, Iraq and Afghanistan… But this is really god!!!” likes a Twitter account called “You don’t talk to communists.”

“Chcimíris, you have reached the peak of your life, you have your comic! Do you recognize each other? How many times have you mindlessly repeated these exact phrases of Russian propaganda? Look, you have one last chance, no one will explain it to you more simply, because it simply cannot be any simpler. Fingers crossed!” another Twitter user appeals to supporters of peace negotiations.
