Charles Verdone Delights Fans at Lecco Film Fest with Stories from His Artistic Career

The actor arrived in the city in the afternoon to introduce the screening of “Umberto D.”, by Vittorio De Sica

The vision of the cinema of the past and his long artistic career are the common thread of the interventions. Hundreds to listen to him in Piazza Garibaldi

LECCO – Actor, director, screenwriter, comedian; an institution in the Italian film scene: Charles Verdone it is told, in one Garibaldi square packed, an estimated one hundred people, during the penultimate event of the Lecco Film Fest. And his speech, as a good artist of laughter, began with a joke, which immediately elicited laughter and applause: “Thank you for this wonderful welcome, I am moved. I’m always amazed by the way you ask me for my autograph, there’s a certain elegance: ask permission, if you can steal two seconds from me for a selfie. In Rome, on the other hand, they give me a pat that breaks my back (in Roman dialect, ed)”.

Fans, film enthusiasts and the curious began to take their seats on Sunday evening in front of the specially set up stage, several hours in advance. Verdone granted himself interviews and, before the intervention, selfies and autographs. The very ones he would later joke about.

The moment continues: between amusing stories and background on the sets, Verdone has retraced years of his career. From the beginning with experimental films, with a camera bought for 70,000 lire by raising family members: “They were images that came to life from dusk to dawn, it was all abstract, they were visions, a bit psychedelic. I send ‘Nocturnal Poetry’ to a competition in Tokyo, after twenty-five days a telegram arrives: I had won the first prize”, continues the actor. then themeeting with Rosselliniwho believed in him.

For Verdone it is a return to Lecco Film Fest – the festival organized by the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo and promoted by Confindustria Lecco and Sondrio. Last year, Covid had stopped his “in presence” arrival in the city: Verdone, however, had not wanted to miss out and in video connection, he had presented to the public one of his most loved films, Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Ordet.

Verdone arrived in Lecco in the afternoon: his presence filled the Cinema Nuovo Aquilone at 3.30 pm where his speech preceded the screening of “Umberto D.” by Vittorio De Sicawith an introduction by Rosario Tronnolone, Vatican Radio editor –
Vatican News. In Verdone’s words there is all the exciting vision of the cinema of the past and the strong bond with De Sica’s work.

In Piazza Garibaldi, on the other hand, the meeting is informal: a chat, amidst applause and above all laughter. The interview is directed by Marina Sanna and Valerio Sammarco from the Rivista del Cinematografo.

And it is in a sentence pronounced during the latter that Verdone’s essence can be summed up: “I went in search of stories from the vintner, from the shoemaker… I saw a very interesting human apparatus, the jokes, the tics, the defects, the frailties the reasonings. I didn’t become a voice impersonator, I became an anime impersonator and I tried to bring them with the magnifying glass to the public”.
