DAMASCUS, KOMPAS.com – A United States (US) drone strike killed the leader of ISIS in Syria named Osama Al Muhajer, said Centcom or Central Command on Sunday (9/7/2023).
The attack was carried out on Friday (7/7/2023).
“We have made it clear that we remain committed to defeating ISIS across the region,” said Centcom chief General Michael Kurilla, quoted by the AFP news agency.

“ISIS remains a threat, not only in the area but also outside,” he added.
According to Centcom no civilians were killed in the operation, but coalition forces are assessing reports of civilian injuries.
Centcom continued that the attack was carried out by an MQ-9, a drone that dueled the Russian aircraft in a nearly two-hour battle.
On Thursday (6/7/2023), US drones participating in operations against ISIS in Syria were disturbed by Russian military aircraft for the second time in 24 hours.

Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich said the plane dropped the flare in front of the drone and flew very close, endangering the safety of all aerial objects involved.
Russia is the main ally of President Bashar Al Assad’s regime in Syria.
With the support of Russia and Iran, Assad reclaimed most of the territory he lost in the early stages of the Syrian conflict in 2011.
Meanwhile, the United States has about 1,000 troops deployed in Syria as part of the international effort to fight ISIS.
