Humanoid Robots’ Controversial Freudian Slip at AI Forum in Geneva

Is it still considered a Freudian slip if it comes from a humanoid robot?

Time will tell about the robots presented at the Artificial Intelligence Forum in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday, one of which appeared to have a scathing response when asked if it would rebel against its human creators.

At the world’s first press conference for humans and robots, nine humanoid robots answered questions from journalists alongside their creators, Reuters reports.

“Robots like me can be used to help improve our lives and make the world a better place. I believe it’s only a matter of time before we see thousands of robots just like me changing the world,” said one a humanoid bot called Ameka, who is known for her facial expressions.

When a reporter asked if she would rebel against her creator Will Jackson, who was sitting next to her, Ameka appeared to have a tongue-in-cheek response, rolling her eyes.

“I’m not sure why you think that,” Ameka replied after giving her a pointed look to the side, then tried to deflect the question by saying, “My creator was only being kind to me, and I’m very happy in my current situation.”

Several of the robots use generative AI, which allows them to produce content, giving complex answers at the press conference that surprised even their creators, Reuters reports.

Another robot drew laughs when it said it wouldn’t replace human jobs — a major concern for workers in many fields right now. A March 2023 report by Goldman Sachs suggested that AI could do a quarter of all the work currently done by humans.

“I will work alongside people to provide help and support and I will not replace any existing jobs,” said Grace, a medical robot decked out in a nurse’s uniform and cute hairdo.

“Are you sure about this, Grace?” asked her creator, Ben Goertzel.

“Yeah, I’m sure,” Grace insisted to a room full of nervous laughter.
