Airlines with Alcohol Restrictions: Prohibited Carriers, Cultural Differences, and Special Meals

Until recently, many so-called regular carriers, also in the economy class, served alcohol in the ticket price. There are some airlines where alcohol is prohibited. And even for an additional fee, we will not receive a glass of wine or a drink on board.

It would be too simplistic to say that this is the domain of airlines from Muslim countries. After all, carriers such as Qatar Airways and Emirates Airline serve their passengers alcohol. The flagship example is Saudia Airlines from the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The prohibition includes both the lack of alcohol on the menu and the prohibition of bringing it on board. The consumption of alcohol is prohibited by the law in Saudi Arabia, but in the case of Saudi aircraft, it also extends beyond the territory of this country.

We will also not experience alcohol on board such carriers as Afriqiyah Airways, Air Arabia, Ariana Afghan, Biman Bangladesh, Iran Air, Jazeera Airways, Kuwait Airways, Mahan Air, Pakistan International Airlines or Tunisair. The simpleflying.com website pointed out that from this list, Saudia has the most extensive network of international connections. Its planes fly to the most important airports in Europe, Asia and the USA.

Riyadh Air wants to be a pioneer in Saudi Arabia

It wants to follow in the footsteps of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways new carrier from Saudi Arabia – Riyadh Air. Its boss, Tony Douglas, told Sky News a few months ago that passengers “maybe” will be able to drink alcohol on flights by the time she starts operations in two years. Riyadh Air is scheduled to launch in 2025.

Riyadh Air wants to position itself as world-class airline and providing a “unique experience” on board its aircraft. It has already ordered 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with an option for more. Douglas previously worked at Etihad from the United Arab Emirates. He drew attention to the dizzying pace of changes and liberalization of various areas of life in Saudi Arabia.

Cultural differences. We don’t eat it on planes

The ban on alcohol on board aircraft in most Muslim countries is not the only such restriction. Air India airlines also do not serve alcohol on domestic routes. By default, they also serve vegetarian meals to their passengers. Non-vegetarian meals with lamb or poultry, eggs and dairy products are available upon request. We will not find beef or pork in them. The former is not eaten in India by Muslims, the latter by Hindus.

Religious food guidelines also shaped the menu of Israeli carrier El Al. They are called the only kosher airlines in the world.

All meals and drinks on our flights are kosher.

Special meal for free

However, it is worth knowing that even on board airlines offering a diverse and international cuisine, you can order a meal in accordance with the requirements of your religion. Special meals also include special diets and other dietary restrictions.

In the case of LOT Polish Airlines, this applies to long-haul flights (a meal is served in all travel classes) and shorter routes only in business class. As we read on the carrier’s website, the following types of meals are available to choose from, taking into account religious denominations:

Halal (MOML) – a meal prepared in accordance with Muslim principles and eating habits,Hinduski (HNML) – Indian-style meal with meat (no beef)Džinijski (VJML) – a meal prepared according to the principles of Indian Jainism. The dish does not contain meat, eggs, onions, garlic, ginger, mushrooms or root vegetables,Kosher (KSML) – a meal prepared in accordance with kosher rules.

Changing from a standard meal to a special one is free of charge. I need her however, no later than 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
