Indonesian Citizen in Nantes: Riots and Looting Everywhere in France, but Local Residents Stay Relaxed

Nantes

Indonesian Citizen at French, Aseani Sethiorini, recounted the tense situation there. Looting occurred everywhere, but the local residents remained relaxed.

This Western European country is indeed in chaos following the violent demonstrations that broke out in almost all cities in the past week.

Indonesian citizens living in Nantes, western part French that said, in the city where he lived the riots began on Thursday (29/6) early in the morning.

Aseani said she and her husband were awakened by an unusual and continuous banging sound.

“We immediately turned on the TV and it turned out that riots were everywhere. The nearest riot point was just one kilometer from my apartment,” Aseani told CNNIndonesia.com.

Demonstrations and clashes between demonstrators and police have continued to expand since June 28 in France. The demonstration was sparked by the shooting of a teenage immigrant by police in Nanterre on Tuesday (27/6) morning.

The shooting was recorded by a resident’s camera at the scene and went viral on social media. On Tuesday evening, demonstrations began in Nanterre and continued to spread to other cities.

As quoted by the Associated Press, until now riotous demonstrations, looting, and burning of public buildings have taken place in more than 200 cities and towns in France.

Hundreds of police officers were reported injured as a result of the demonstrations that took place since last week. Police have also arrested at least 3,400 people related to this riot.

“Info from other Indonesian citizens who live in French also in the vicinity of their house a shop was looted and damaged. There was also the mayor’s office that was burnt down,” said Aseani.

Aseani said demonstrations were actually not a rare thing in France. According to him, almost every time, protests and demonstrations take place in the capital and other big cities.

“However, what is currently (demonstration) is serious, it is really riotous. In the two years I have lived in France, this is the first time I have seen riots like this,” he explained.

Even though the riots continued to spread, Aseani said most people were still carrying out their activities as usual. This is because most of the riots took place on the outskirts of big cities.

Meanwhile, according to the woman who is familiarly called Ceni, the city center is still safe and peaceful. Aseani even said that offices and restaurants were still open as usual.

However, he said public transportation was indeed badly affected by the riots. This is because the authorities implemented a curfew for public transportation.

Several transportation routes were also diverted to avoid riot spots. Aseani said he also had to switch to using a bicycle because the train he usually rides closed early due to curfew.

“Citizens are still active as usual, they may just be more alert and avoid areas that may become riot spots. There are still a lot of tourists but maybe not as many as in the summer of previous years because those who want to come here may be wary after seeing the news, ” said Aseani.
