GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Review: Performance and Memory Comparison Against RTX 3060 Ti

More powerful next-generation GeForces usually offer noticeably higher performance and more memory. However, the RTX 4060 Ti did not improve much against the RTX 3060 Ti.

Pros

High performance for resolutions lower than 4K Quiet and powerful cooler with a large reserve Consumption and efficiency DLSS 2.x, DLSS 3 and AV1 codec support

Minuses

Only 8 GB of memory Small performance increase against RTX 3060 Ti Worse price/performance ratio than RTX 3060 Ti DisplayPort only in version 1.4a

With the new GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, Nvidia is only targeting gaming at 1080p resolutions. There are more reasons. First of all, it is a memory capacity of 8 GB, which already represents the necessary minimum for new cards today, a narrower 128b memory bus and thus a lower memory throughput. The other parameters of the chip already correspond to a rather lower class, the number of PCIe 4.0 bus lines is reduced to half, i.e. to eight.

It is precisely the zero shift in memory capacity that bothers those interested in the 8GB RTX 4060 Ti most often. In the previous generation, Nvidia already had a lower-ranked RTX 3060 model with 12 GB of memory in its offer. It made it seem illogical that most higher-end GeForce RTX 30s only have 8-10GB of memory.

Two years ago it wasn’t such a problem, but now the first games are starting to appear, which even in Full HD require more than 8 GB of memory at maximum details. If the memory is not enough, the image stutters, frame rates drop, or low-resolution textures jump on objects in the game. It is possible to help by using FSR or DLSS, or by setting a lower texture resolution, but the texture resolution is one of the settings that has the most impact on image quality.

A generation later, next to the 12GB RTX 3060, 8GB in the RTX 4060 Ti looks like a step backwards. Perhaps this is also why Nvidia decided to offer a variant with twice the memory capacity. The RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of memory is due to arrive a few weeks later, and you will pay roughly over two and a half thousand more for it.
