An organism with seven types of DNA
Scientists have studied in detail the genetic makeup of cryptomonas “cryptomonas gyropyrenoidosa”. It is a single cell, but it consists of several formations. When the scientists followed the DNA of the individual components, they discovered that there are a total of 7 types of genetic information in the organism. This set a new record. As pointed out by Dr. Jan Pačes from the Institute of Molecular Genetics AV, we should reconsider how we look at living organisms.
Treatment with hormones
The sensational discovery of insulin, with which Frederick Banting stunned the world in the early 1920s, led a number of capable researchers to the study of hormones, among them the physiologist Frank Alexander Hartman, a professor at the University of Buffalo in the United States. He started researching the adrenal glands, which, thanks to the recently discovered adrenaline, were then the second most popular endocrine gland after the pancreas. On July 8, 1930, 93 years ago, he succeeded in curing Addison’s disease with adrenal cortex hormone. We reminded you of this in the column It happened this day, which is prepared by Ing. Francis Houdek.
Do bugs use tools?

When scientists discovered a new species of bug, they were surprised that it stuck to their fingers. At first they thought it was some kind of mistake, but when they focused on them, it turned out that all members of the species were sticky. Detailed research has shown that bedbugs are deliberately sticking to one type of grass. Why? Are they using it as a tool? Biologist Prof. Jaroslav Petr.
False viper

For us, a fake is a person who pretends something. But animals are often fake too. A person who pretends something wants to gain some benefit by doing so. But with animals, something much more serious is at stake, because it is about life. Now imagine you are a snake. You have the option to be afraid, you have the option to run and hide, and you also have the option to pretend to be someone else, someone dangerous that the enemy prefers to avoid. Miloň Čepelka reads zoologist Karel Pecl’s experiences of meeting a false viper.
Which comet returns most often?

It may take thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of years for the comet to return to the Sun again. There are also those that fly past our star only once and never return. The other extreme is comets returning multiple times during a human lifetime. The record holder is Encke’s comet, which returns every 3.3 years. The high return frequency is due to the extremely short orbit, the comet only moves between Mercury and Jupiter. Other similarities were brought by dr. Pavel Koten from the Astronomical Institute AV.
Doctor Paracelsus in his studies
His name was Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, but he entered history under the name Paracelsus. In the field of medicine, it is a concept. He reformed medicine to make it, one might say, more scientific. At the beginning of the 16th century, this was a great advance. At the same time, he was a very complex personality with whom almost no one could stand. He openly challenged the authorities of his time, which had a bad effect on his career. This personality impressed Josef Kleibl, the founder and long-time editor of Meteor, so much that in 1989 he commissioned a six-part dramatization of the life of Paracelsus. The doctor lies on his deathbed, remembering his life and his conscience gnaws at his head…
