French Workers Struggle with Mental Workload: New Study Reveals Impact on Personal and Professional Life

One in seven French people* thinks of work when making love!

ONLINE TESTING to self-assess their professional mental load index

Mooncard, in partnership with the Ifop institute, unveiled the fourth edition of its professional mental workload barometer. With the approach of summer breaks often rhyming with the idea of total disconnection and recharging of batteries, more than eight out of ten French people (83%) confess that they cannot take full advantage of their holidays, haunted by work.

But what is the professional mental workload? It is a phenomenon of psychological congestion caused by professional concerns, including outside working hours.

Mooncard, a pioneering start-up in professional dematerialization, innovates and offers everyone the opportunity to self-assess themselves via a test on its site, to find out their own mental load index. An unusual way to identify the various stress factors that can affect professional and personal life through a ripple effect.

This exclusive synthetic index takes into account the answers to six questions in order to be able to associate an overall score of well-being with certain behaviors: the level of stress felt at work, the fact of thinking about work in the evening, on weekends, impression of not getting out of it, difficulty falling asleep at night, and the feeling of intrusion of his professional life into his personal life.

The Mooncard study reveals that there are several situations where work can play an intrusive role in the lives of a majority of French people* questioned: more than eight out of ten (83%) of them say they have difficulty fall asleep at night, or 91% also explain that they think about work on weekends. More surprisingly, the survey reveals that one person in seven (14%) questioned admits to even thinking about work while making love!

These signals should be taken seriously. The deterioration of intimate moments has a major impact on the morale of those concerned, as a family or as a couple. Ditto 88% of respondents reveal that they “often” have the impression of not getting on with their workload (index of 6.7). And to go further, many of them have even thought about resigning (index of 5.5), which reveals the extent of the malaise at work, and the need to promote a climate and favorable professional conditions.

“Everyone should use this indicator to assess where they are personally. For the first time, we are making it available to the general public via an online test on the Mooncard website. As an HRD, I encourage companies to share this test with their teams, to open the discussion on the boundary between professional life and personal life. But also to help target overdue employees before it’s too late; whether it is disengagement, resignations or problems related to the physical and mental health of the employee”, analyse Claire Schroeder, Human Resources Director of Mooncard.

*Methodology

The survey was conducted by a self-administered online questionnaire from May 12 to 25, 2023, with a sample of 1,002 executives working in structures with 10 or more employees. Representativeness was ensured by the quota method (sex, age, sector of activity, level of qualification) after stratification by region.
