The Beauty and the Secret: Behind the Scenes of Georgy Danelia’s ‘Afonya’

The beauty from the dance floor had an interesting secret.

Georgy Danelia’s painting “Afonya” was released in 1975 and became incredibly popular. Initially conceived as a comedy, the film turned out to be incredibly dramatic, subtle and heartfelt. And the well-aimed phrases of the film’s characters were quoted throughout the Soviet Union.

On the set of any film in the USSR, costume designers and props had to resort to a variety of tricks in order to create the right picture even in conditions of shortage. But the film crew of “Afoni” did not succeed immediately.

One of the minor heroines, Lyudmila, was supposed to have an impressive bust size. The performer of this role, Tatyana Rasputina, had a much more modest figure. To create the desired image, the actress decided to figure out false breasts. It was made from two contraceptives, into which water was poured. But during the incendiary dance of the girl, the “bust” burst, and she was wet from head to toe.

Then I had to replace the girl’s uniforms with two bags of semolina. To keep them better, they were tied in a knot on the back.
