New Minsa Covid-19 Vaccination Protocol: No Longer Necessary for Third or Fourth Dose for Bivalent Vaccine

According to the new Minsa Covid-19 vaccination protocol, it will no longer be necessary to have the third or fourth dose to receive the bivalent vaccine.

Given the increase in cold cases, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reminded citizens that having only two doses against Covid-19 is not enough to avoid health complications caused by the virus. The recommendation is that people over 12 years of age complete their protection with the booster bivalent vaccine, which can be received as a third dose.

According to the new Minsa Covid-19 vaccination protocol, it will no longer be necessary to have the third or fourth dose to receive the bivalent vaccine. People 12 years of age or older who have two doses can access the booster dose and better protect themselves since this vaccine contains two types of antigens: one of the original covid-19 strain (Wuhan) and another of the omicron variant.

María Elena Martínez, director of Immunizations of the Minsa, reiterated that the Peruvian State offers safe, effective and quality vaccines to the entire population, covering boys and girls from 6 months to those over 60 years of age. So all families are invited to get vaccinated against covid-19.

“During the most critical months of the pandemic, when there were no vaccines, we suffered the deaths of more than 200,000 compatriots. For this reason, if we complete the vaccination against covid-19, we will avoid new outbreaks of cases and deaths due to the virus”, stressed the specialist.

Martínez commented that there are still people who kept one or two doses against covid-19, a circumstance that puts them at risk of becoming seriously ill with covid-19 since they have not strengthened their protection.

Likewise, there is a vaccination gap in the population of boys and girls between 6 months and 4 years. In this regard, the Director of Immunizations recalled that the little ones can also suffer complications from SARS-CoV-2, therefore, it is important that they also receive the pediatric vaccine.
