Remembering Johnie Cooks: Former Super Bowl Winner and Legendary Bulldog

Sad news from the football world. Johnie Cooks, former Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants, has died at the age of 64. This was announced by his former university. The reason for the death was not given.

“Johnie Cooks was undoubtedly one of the best players to ever wear the maroon and white jerseys, and he was one of the most decorated college football players of his day,” said Mississippi State University athletic director Zac Selmon an explanation.

And further: “He really achieved everything in his career. As a bulldog he won one award after another, later in the NFL the Super Bowl. Johnie will always be remembered as a legend of our university.”

Johnie Cooks won the Super Bowl with the Giants

The linebacker earned three All-SEC honors during his collegiate career. He has the fourth-most in varsity history with 24 sacks and fifth-most with 392 tackles. He once managed 24 tackles in just one game.

Drafted second to the Baltimore Colts in 1982, he was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season. He played with the Colts for seven years, during which time the franchise moved to Indianapolis.

He was fired from Indy in 1988 and subsequently signed with the Giants, with whom he won the 1990 Super Bowl. After a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns, he finally ended his ten-year NFL career.
