The Success Story of Otto Toto Sugiri: Finding Peace of Mind and Happiness through the To Be Attitude

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Not a few people judge that the measure of success is how much money and assets they have. However, this is contrary to the principles of the Boss of DCI Indonesia, as well as the 23rd richest person in RI, Otto Toto Sugiri.

The man who was born in 1953 said that success depends on definite goals in life to seek peace of mind. The mental calm that Toto meant was like meeting the needs of clothing, food and shelter.

Interestingly, this mindset emerged because of the book. Yes, Toto had a “magic” book in his life and he learned a lot from it.

“I used to imagine, when I’m old I won’t work, I won’t earn money anymore, what will life be like? So humans only have two choices in life, as written in the book To Have or to Be by Erich Fromm,” said Toto when met by Kompas.com, at his office, Wednesday (5/7/2023).

He also said that he learned a lot from the German book. This old book often used by psychology students became a guide for him, when many people were trapped in the world’s greed.

“From there I learned that historically, humans live with two choices, and most of their orientation is trapped by wanting to have, with that thinking as if they get happiness,” said the founder of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) company PT Indonet.

“Most of the people are oriented there. Language goes there too. Like, when saying ‘I have 3 children from 1 wife’, I have three children, which is the attitude to have. But, if he has the attitude to be, then he says ‘I am the father of 3 children’. That’s a big difference, because when you have three children, you become the father, don’t you?,” he added.

This is also no different from marriage. The former German Informatics Technology student said that a partner who has a To Have attitude does not guarantee good treatment between the two.

It’s different if the attitude is To Be, then marriage is like a partnership.

“The thought (ego) of ‘possession’ is very bad if it falls there. It’s as if he’s happy with one material thing, but no, he’s not going to achieve that,” said the 69-year-old.

Another example, when Toto built a villa in Bali. Indeed, at the beginning of construction he was very happy, but the villa was only occupied 1-2 weeks a year. It was considered very useless and a waste of money for maintenance costs.

“Do I have that? Will I be happy with having a villa in Bali? Happiness is being able to sit here and enjoy the view. Because, economically, the cost of the villa is IDR 20 million a month at a minimum,” he explained.

“For the young, if you can digest the contents of the book, you will know the direction of your life. Don’t get caught in the wrong direction. For example, a friend of mine has a new car, then joins in, buying branded bags, which in the end we get stuck and can never have enough, can’t be happy,” he said.

The founder of Sigma Cipta Caraka, Indointernet, and DCI Indonesia also admitted that he had never once hoped and dreamed of living a life of wealth. One principle that he holds, is how life can help and benefit others.

“Big success is being able to help and be useful for others. Things like that became my guide to starting my own business. I don’t have aspirations of making a lot of money because I’m already happy with my job, and my motivation is really big to make software (products) with that goal in mind,” he explained.
