During the Q1 qualifying session for the British GP, round 11 of Formula 1 on Saturday, July 8, there was a dispute within Ferrari over team orders. Carlos Sainz ignored the arrangement and passed Charles Leclerc to start a flying lap.
Regarding the track position, which can affect the result, the team generally alternates which driver exits the garage first so that there is no unfairness in the order of attack.
Leclerc had the priority this time, but Sainz passed Leclerc at Turn 16 in the closing stages of the out lap. I started the measurement lap first. Leclerc quipped, “Nice Carlos. Good overtaking.”

At the red flag stop before the final lap, Leclerc was provisionally third and Sainz fourth. Normally, it would be easy to break through, but the road surface improved significantly during this time, and the time sheet was virtually returned to a blank slate.
As a result, Leclerc was 2nd and Sainz was 12th, passing through Q2 and advancing to the final Q3, with the former securing 4th and the latter 5th on the grid.
After qualifying, Leclerc said about the incident with Sainz, “It’s not a big deal because it didn’t affect the result.”
“Obviously the adrenaline was pumping while I was behind the wheel and it’s true that at that point I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it through, but his radio message just didn’t make the point.”
On the other hand, Sainz acknowledged that Leclerc had priority, but said, “The checkered flag was approaching, and there was considerable pressure to lose in Q1.” Although he waited patiently, he recalled, “At some point, I had no choice but to go.”
“Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to start the lap.”
When the Ferraris were running on the out lap for the final lap, there were nearly seven cars lined up around turn 16, including them.
“The problem is that the guys behind us passed us,” Sainz said, claiming he was forced to overtake his team-mate because the so-called gentlemen’s agreement had been broken.
In F1, there is a gentlemen’s agreement to keep the turn and not overtake each other before the start of the qualifying flying lap, but of course it is not a regulation and has no binding force, which is often a cause of controversy.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the pole position in the 2023 F1 British GP qualifying. Lando Norris was 2nd and Oscar Piastri was 3rd.
