Bluesky Social Gains Momentum as Twitter CEO Elon Musk Sparks Controversial Changes

09 July 2023 at 00:18

After controversial course changes by Twitter CEO Elon Musk, a competitor of the social media platform sees the number of users rising rapidly. In the past week, about 300,000 people have joined Bluesky Social.

The platform now probably has about 1.1 million users, market researcher Data.ai has calculated. Bluesky has been available for just over four months.

In February, people with iPhones could install the app, since April people could also download the service on devices with an Android operating system. People can only join by invitation from Bluesky itself or from existing users. Bluesky may open later this year and anyone can create an account.

Bluesky was set up by Jack Dorsey, among others. He founded Twitter in 2006. Basically, both services work in the same way. Users can post short messages for other users to see. On Bluesky, those messages are called skeets, a portmanteau of sky tweets.

Elon Musk bought Twitter last year, reportedly for more than $40 billion. Since then he has been trying to earn back the money in all sorts of ways. For example, Twitter blocked automated accounts and the check mark disappeared as a symbol that the user’s identity had been checked.

Last week, users received a message that they can now read a maximum number of messages in a day. The Tweetdeck service, where users can view accounts more clearly, will only be available for a fee in a few weeks.
