Bus Collision in Manhattan Leaves Dozens Injured

NEW YORK – A large collision between two buses in Manhattan left dozens of passengers injured. A total of 18 were taken to area hospitals Thursday night.

Fire Department New York (FDNY) officials said two buses, one Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and another double-decker tour, collided near East 23rd Street. and 1st Avenue, around 7:00 p.m.

MTA bus #2481 was reported to be traveling east on 23rd Street when it collided with the other double-decker, which was heading north on 1st Avenue.

According to the authorities, the accident ended with 30 injured people: 25 adults and five children. All those treated were reported to have suffered minor injuries and were transported to Bellevue and Cornell Hospitals where they were expected to survive.

The total patient count was still fluctuating, but FDNY officials said first responders were testing a total of 81 people.

Efforts to rescue people aboard the tour bus were hampered by the size of the vehicle, the fire department said at a news conference. People had to be pulled out of the windows and off the upper deck with the help of a ladder.

Most injuries appear to be cuts, bruises, and scrapes. Some people might have fractures.
