The Port of Algeciras experiences exponential growth in container traffic with the UK due to Brexit.

The Port of Algeciras has experienced an exponential increase in import and export container traffic with the United Kingdom, reporting growth of an impressive 200% through the “Bye bye Brexit” program. Hello UK!”, an initiative promoted by ICEX, as confirmed by Eva García, Business Development technician General Subdirectorate of Development and Commercial at the APBA.

According to Garcia, the boom is largely due to customs changes resulting from Brexit. “The uncertainty of many exporters in customs clearance has made them turn their trade flows by sea instead of international road traffic, which was the most traditional,” explained Eva García.

The Port of Algeciras, strategically located close to Gibraltar, has experienced an exceptional increase in container traffic as a result. “The growth that has occurred in Algeciras is much higher, with percentages above 200%, while in Andalusia there has been a lower growth, but reduced because of Brexit,” said García.

Eva García also provided a breakdown of the trade flows that have experienced the highest growth. Export has seen an impressive increase of 270%, while imports have grown modestly, only 23%. Chemical products, such as soaps and polycarboxylic acids, top the list of the most important exports from the Port of Algeciras, closely followed by agri-food products, including olive oil, wine, fruit juices and pasta.
