With another week, another test release of the operating system has arrived in the Dev channel. Several times in a row, the Redmonds attract news that can be seen. Windows 11 Insider Preview build 23493 in particular shows a functional Copilot for the first time, i.e. artificial intelligence in the sidebar. We dedicated a separate article to her.
Not everyone will try it right away, because Microsoft deploys the helper in a controlled manner. In the past, the Redmonds have been heavily focused on Settings, and they continue to do so. This time we are talking about a really visible change. When you open Settings, it welcomes you right away new home screenwhich selects a few items that Microsoft deems important.
In existing Windows 11, after opening Settings, you will immediately find yourself in the first subsection of the category System. The home screen doesn’t seem to customize to you in any significant way, showing preferences that you realistically change often. With the exception of the first card. Microsoft prepared seven cards:
recommended settings where you’ll see custom preferences, OneDrive info, Microsoft account recovery, wallpaper and color scheme settings, Microsoft 365 subscription info, Xbox subscription info, Bluetooth device management.
The home screen in Settings shortens access to some information and preferences
Controlled distribution comes into play again. The home screen only appears in Home and Pro editions on devices that are not managed by your organization. In addition to Copilot, build 23493 also brings other news that Microsoft promised us in May.
Backup, compression and volume
At the end of May, the Redmonds showed us for the first time data backup and recovery the new Windows Backup tool. They have expanded its capabilities so that it now supports more types of applications. It also “saves” desktop ones, restoring pinned shortcuts to both the taskbar and the Start menu.
These are apps that you didn’t install from the Store. This could be a big deal, but in that case the system will just redirect you to sites where you can re-download and manually install your program. That’s not how a revolution happens. Recovery is only available during the initial setup after (re)installing the system.
Windows 11 also saves pinned shortcuts
classic programs and prompts you to install
Briefly mentioned during the Build conference support for unpacking multiple types of archives she also arrived. Microsoft names 7Z, RAR, TAR, TAR.BZ2, TAR.GZ, TAR.XZ, TAR.ZST, TBZ2, TGZ, TXZ, and TZST. This is an incomplete list. For now, decompression of hard 7Z and RAR archives is slow, at least the voluminous ones, but compression has generally become faster thanks to optimizations.
You can open archives like RAR or 7Z without an external tool
In the winter, we got our first and unofficial glimpse of the new volume mixer. Then it appeared in the Canary channel, and now it’s much closer to completion as it enters Windows 11 in the Dev channel. You can display the menu for managing audio devices by clicking on the speaker icon next to the clock, or using a keyboard shortcut Win+Ctrl+V.
In the menu, you not only switch between output devices, but also use it to control surround sound and manually adjust the volume of partial audio sources, which can be different programs.
You can now manage audio sources in the menu above the main panel
Pinning and layout of windows
Back in March, Microsoft informed us that a new API would allow apps to politely ask you if they can pin a representative to the main panel. Windows 11 build 23493 includes this API and I happened to find that Firefox already supports it today.
If the program is decent, it will ask you to pin
Along with endorsing pinning, Microsoft is introducing a link that manufacturers can use that will take you to the Settings section with associations for that program. It promises itself not to pin shortcuts or change program associations in sneaky ways, but rather gives you a choice and asks politely. So much theory, let’s wait for practice.
They represent another novelty suggestions on how to arrange windows on the screen. It is a practical use of artificial intelligence that we have been waiting for at least since spring. You can find suggestions in the window pinning menu, which you can access by hovering over the window’s refresh and maximize button (Win+Z). The function is deployed in a controlled manner.
