Mexican Congress Discusses Educational Programs and Campaigns for Organ and Tissue Donation

The Health Assistance and Social Welfare Commission of the Mexican Congress, chaired by Deputy Alfredo Quiroz Fuentes (PRI), held a working meeting with Jesús Ricardo Pérez Mendoza, director of the State Transplant Center of the State of Mexico (Cetraem), in order to to analyze the initiative to establish and strengthen educational programs and information campaigns for organ and tissue donation.

As part of the analysis of the initiative of the deputy Martha Amalia Moya Bastón and the deputy Enrique Vargas del Villar, member and coordinator of the PAN bench, the legislator María del Carmen de la Rosa Mendoza (Morena) questioned what are the main obstacles for encourage donation and reduce the waiting list. She asked how municipalities could be involved in dissemination campaigns and education programs, or if there is a state program to replicate it at the municipal level.

Legislator Rosa María Zetina González (Morena) said that, according to figures from the National Transplant Center, in Mexico there are currently more than 23,000 people waiting for an organ and there is only an offer of 29 percent of people registered as potential donors. He indicated that every 20 minutes a person dies waiting for a transplant and every 10 minutes one more person is added to the waiting list, for which he asked how many medical units have a license for donation and transplants and asked to know the transplant program and linkage mechanisms.

Proponent deputy Martha Amalia Moya recognized the work on organ donation done so far in the entity and hoped that the initiative to reform the Administrative Code would help more and more people join the culture of donation. She regretted that there is one more area of ​​the health sector affected by the lack of resources, an aspect in which the deputy Alfredo Quiroz agreed.

In his speech, the director of the State Transplant Center spoke of the importance of promoting the culture of organ donation from childhood, and from home, especially among young people, as well as maintaining programs that contribute to this purpose. . He highlighted obstacles such as the lack of economic and human inputs and, above all, the lack of knowledge of people regarding donations.

In responding to the questions of the legislators, he reported on his activities to promote the culture of organ and tissue donation and that Cetraem has remained in the first places in terms of donation for the last 10 years; that is to say, that a quarter of the country’s organs come from it.
