Syrian and Russian Authorities Take Rapid Measures to Prevent Rebellion: Sources

When Wagner fighters were advancing towards Moscow in an attempted rebellion in late June, the authorities in Syria and the Russian military commanders there were taking a series of rapid measures and measures against the PMG agents, to prevent the rebellion from widening, according to informed sources told Reuters.

Six sources stated, “The crackdown, which has not been previously reported, included:

Among the sources that disclosed these events were Syrian security officials, sources stationed near Russian forces in Syria, and regional officials.

The sources declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the military information.

According to Reuters, the Syrian government, the Russian Defense Ministry, or Wagner in Russia did not respond to requests for comment.

These measures reveal how the Syrian authorities moved quickly to control the fighters, fearing that Moscow, Damascus’ main military partner, would be distracted by the events that were taking place inside Russia, according to two Syrian sources familiar with the operations.

Mystery dominated during the past hours the news related to the whereabouts of the group leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, especially after the statements of the Belarusian President, Alexander Lukashenko, that Prigozhin is not in Belarus, but in St. Petersburg.

Lukashenko’s statements contradicted what was circulated after the end of the failed rebellion, when it was said at the time that it was agreed that Prigozhin would go to Belarus, while his men were given the option to join him or integrate into the Russian regular armed forces.
