After a large analysis of nearly 250,000 people, researchers named full-fat dairy products as one of six “essential” foods for lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke, along with fish, nuts, legumes and vegetables.

A study prepared by the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, revealed that eating six foods that include dairy and nuts may protect against heart disease, according to the Daily Mail.

An ideal healthy diet, dubbed PURE, consists of three to four weekly servings of legumes, seven servings of nuts, two to three servings of fish and 14 servings of full-fat dairy products including: That milk, yogurt or cheese.

The researchers also explained that it is also possible to consume “moderate amounts”, or one serving per day, of whole grains and unprocessed meats.

This could include one slice of bread, half a cup of cooked rice, barley or quinoa, and about three ounces (85 grams) of cooked red meat or poultry.

Dr Andrew Minty, lead author of the study, said: “Low-fat foods have taken center stage with the public, the food industry and policymakers, with nutrition labels focusing on reducing fat and saturated fat.”

“Our findings suggest that the priority should be to increase protective foods such as nuts, which are often avoided as energy-dense, fish and dairy products, rather than restricting dairy products, especially whole fats, to very low amounts.”

He also noted that the findings show that up to two daily servings of dairy products, most of which are full fat, can be included in a healthy diet.

“This is consistent with recent nutritional science showing that dairy products, especially full fat, may protect against high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome,” he added.
