Van der Sar, now 52 years old, has retired from professional football since 2011. The last club he defended was Manchester United, where he won four Premier League trophies, two English League Cups and one Champions League in six seasons.
Prior to MU, he was first known as a goalkeeper for Ajax, Juventus and Fulham. His toughness under the rule also made him a mainstay of the Dutch national team in 1995-2008 and made 130 appearances, although he never led the Oranje to win.
He then moved into the world of club management after being appointed as Ajax’s marketing director in November 2012, then was appointed CEO at the end of 2016. He held that position until the end of last May, when he chose to step down.
The failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League after only finishing third in the Dutch League was said to be the factor behind this decision, even though in an official statement Van der Sar said he was tired and wanted to step aside for a while from football.
Get well soon, Edwin!
