Toyota’s Breakthrough in Battery Technology: Achieving 1,500 km Range per Charge in Five Years

In five years, 1,500 km per charge

The Japanese automaker announced this week that it has succeeded in simplifying the production of a material used in both conventional batteries with a liquid electrolyte and those with a solid one. “In the case of both liquid and solid electrolyte, we are heading for fundamental changes so that batteries are no longer too large, heavy and expensive. Our goal is to cut all these factors in half,” said Keiji Kajta, Toyota’s head of research and development.

Toyota is already preparing a new architecture that will serve as the basis for fully electric models. It will start offering these from 2026. At the same time, the first generation of batteries with solid electrolyte should ensure a range of up to 1,200 kilometers per charge for the most economical models. However, more advanced cells are also expected, which will extend the range up to 1,500 kilometers. They should appear in 2028, i.e. in five years.

Solid electrolyte batteries are widely considered to be the successor of today’s technology, but they are still only talked about. There are a number of start-ups that are engaged in their development, but they have not yet appeared in a production car. At the same time, it should be about articles that will be more reliable and also safer than the current ones.
