Check out Tele 5 tonight for the action spectacle ‘Red Sky’ by Mario Van Peebles!

Do you have a weakness for action spectacles at dizzy heights? Then it could be worthwhile for you to take a look at Tele 5 today. “Red Sky” by cult filmmaker Mario Van Peebles will be shown there on July 6, 2023.

Tony Scott’s “Top Gun” was half romance and half military commercial at the time – and yet it made it into an action classic that is still anchored in pop culture more than 35 years later and was impressively continued with “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. The sequel is one of the very, very big blockbuster highlights of the recent past, became the biggest hit in Tom Cruise’s career to date and got the audience excited about flying. If your euphoria continues to this day and you are looking for other genre contributions, it might be worth taking a look at free TV tonight:

Tele 5 shows “Red Sky” this Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 8:15 p.m. You won’t see Tom Cruise in it (he will be in cinemas from July 13th in “Mission: Impossible 7”), but there will be a group of well-known faces. Among others, “Independence Day” President Bill Pullman, “Twilight” vampire Cam Gigandet, “One Like No One” Rachael Leigh Cook, Shane West (“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”) and cult Mime Mario Van Peebles (“Heartbreak Ridge”), who also took over the direction.

That’s what “Red Sky” is about

Butch (Cam Gigandet) is a pilot in an elite Navy unit where he one day comes face to face with his one-time best friend and partner Tom (Shane West) – who now works as a stooge for a terrorist organization. And it was they who got their hands on a dangerous weapon of mass destruction called “Rainmaker”, which allegedly came from Saddam Hussein himself and is capable of contaminating oil fields in entire countries.

Masters’ assignment: He should defuse the danger and destroy the “Rainmaker”. To do this, he has to try to smooth things over with his adversary. In addition, Masters is confronted with a threat from his own ranks and then, to make matters worse, falls in love with an investigative journalist (Rachael Leigh Cook) of all people…

Die Low-Budget-Version von “Top Gun”

No matter on which film rating platform you search for “Red Sky”, one thing is clear from the average reviews: You won’t find a second (or third) “Top Gun” here! The Russian-American co-production may have had military support from both Russia and the US, but unfortunately that doesn’t make Butch Masters a maverick. Instead, “Red Sky” is the cheap version of the cruise blockbuster – although this also has to be classified correctly:

Because even if the special effects in the trailer can’t keep up with Hollywood’s A-League (or B-League…), they aren’t nearly as bad as the CGI thunderstorms that can be seen in the mockbusters from Asylum (including “Sharknado “) knows. Fans of the star ensemble and of trashy-looking action spectacles can take a look – but they should approach the film with the right expectations. Oh, and if you are or were *NSYNC fans: singer JC Chasez is also in the party!
