The Ministry of Environment and Water continues to monitor the state of sea waters after the destruction of the wall of the Nova Kakhovka dam

The Ministry of Environment and Water provides a full follow-up of possible environmental damage in the Bulgarian Black Sea water area after the destruction of the wall of the Nova Kakhovka dam, located on the Dnieper River in Ukraine. The frequency of sampling is sufficient to make an objective assessment of the current state of the sea waters, the institution assures.

Information is being exchanged with the Ukrainian, Moldovan and Romanian authorities about potential water pollution in the Black Sea.

July 6: Bulgarian waters remain clear, two spots spotted, possibly from oil products dumped by a ship

The Ministry of Environment and Water continues to monitor the state of the sea waters after the destruction of the wall of the Nova Kakhovka dam.

The forecast for the northwestern Black Sea until July 14 remains favorable, with potential pollutants circulating in Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone. To date, digital modeling and satellite monitoring do not indicate the likelihood of potential pollutants entering Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.

The mix of Dnieper and Dniester sediments, which was observed in the last 26 days in Ukrainian waters, is no longer observed. In the exclusive economic zone of Bulgaria, two spots were noticed, probably from oil products discharged from a ship. The data is also confirmed by the Maritime Administration monitoring system.

The northern spot is located 75 km from Durankulak and the southern spot about 118 km from Emona. For the movement of the two spots, a simulation was made for the time until July 14. The southern spot will slow down its movement to the southwest towards the Bulgarian coastline and will orient itself to the northwest, moving away from the border of our territorial sea.

The northern spot will slow its movement around July 11 and will remain outside the 12-mile zone of the Republic of Bulgaria, which clearly shows that there are no concerns related to bathing areas along our Black Sea coast.

The Ministry of Environment and Water is in continuous contact with the Maritime Administration and will continue to monitor the movement of oil slicks until they are completely dispersed.
