Brussels Nightlife: Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage after Technotemple Fuse Noise Complaints

The Brussels nightlife is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage. This happens in the aftermath of the noise complaints against technotemple Fuse.

Brussels nightlife is recognized as intangible cultural heritage. State Secretary for Urban Planning and Heritage Ans Persoons (one.brussels-Vooruit) announced this.

It concerns about twenty nightclubs that receive the recognition, including Fuse, Mirano, Spirito, La Cabane, Madame Mustache, C12 and Bloody Louis.

The decision comes in the wake of the noise complaints against techno club Fuse. Last January, the technotemple threatened to close its doors after a complaint from a neighbor. Brussels Environment had decided that Fuse could only stay open until 2 am and could not exceed the noise limit of 95 decibels. Since that was not feasible for the club, Fuse wanted to throw in the towel. The club now has two years to reduce noise nuisance.

Because there was a lot of criticism about the possible closure of Fuse, the Brussels nightlife sector has taken the initiative to have nightlife recognized as cultural heritage. There will be no legal consequences for matters similar to Fuse’s. “It is rather symbolic,” said the State Secretary.
