Top Disappointing Cars of 2023: German and American Models Reviewed

In this video, the host of the YouTube channel “Car Help Corner” (a YouTube channel aimed at customers in North America and Canada) presents some new cars that have disappointed in 2023. The first three models are German, and the other two are American.

The first vehicle on the list is the Volkswagen Taos, a compact SUV/crossover sold in North America that was designed to compete with similar models such as the Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross. To give you an idea, the model is positioned below the Tiguan and above the T-Cross. The vlogger found the Taos below expectations during the test drive. A major disappointment was the available engines. Some of them would have a reputation for reliability issues.

The BMW X1, BMW’s smallest and most affordable crossover, received a complete redesign for 2023. While some updates improved the model, there were areas where the X1 seems to regress. One of the issues would be the engine, a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder unit with class-leading power and acceleration. However, it is plagued by a start-stop system that has been described by the Americans as “rudimentary”. Additionally, the X1’s dual-clutch transmission also contributes to a jerky driving experience at low speeds. The X1’s interior has also garnered some complaints, particularly regarding the iDrive 8 infotainment system. While visually appealing, it can be frustrating to use and distracting while driving due to the lack of conventional controls and the rather small screen.

The Mercedes EQB is a fully electric version of the GLB, a compact SUV. However, EQB falls short in several respects. Its driving range is unimpressive, with only about 370 kilometers on a single charge. The infotainment system and steering wheel controls are clunky to use. Comparatively, the Tesla Model Y offers better range, access to the Supercharger network, an easier-to-use infotainment system and a lower price.

Americans are complaining about these SUVs tested in 2023

The Ford Bronco Sport Heritage Edition, despite its unique and attractive looks, proved to be a significant disappointment during a test drive this year. While it offers some off-road capability and stands out among other mundane SUVs on the road, its shortcomings overshadow its positives. The three-cylinder turbo engine lacks power, struggling to move the relatively heavy SUV. The engine also has some reliability issues, including a major safety recall involving cracked injectors that can lead to a fire. Models like the Mazda CX-5 or Toyota RAV4 offer better value for money.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xE, the plug-in hybrid version, did not live up to expectations during the test drive. The hybrid system lacked fluidity and refinement, with the turbocharged four-cylinder starting and stopping frequently in a less-than-smooth manner. Electric range was disappointing.
