– Today Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashin and lawyer Aleksandr Nemov were attacked in Chechnya. Unidentified men in masks cut them off on their way from Grozny airport and beat them, destroying their equipment and documents, wrote the newspaper on Telegram on Tuesday morning.

Avisa writes on Thursday that Milasjin is admitted to a hospital in Moscow and that her condition is stable. At the same time, they share pictures of what are supposed to be the injuries she has sustained.

Threatened with a weapon

The human rights organization Memorial says that they have been threatened with weapons and asked to stop writing and leave the country by the perpetrators.

Milasjin was awarded Human Rights Watch’s Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism in 2009. She is considered one of the leading investigative journalists at Novaya Gazeta. She is said to have spent the last few years reporting on human rights violations in Chechnya.

It is not the first time the Russian journalist has allegedly been assaulted because of his work. In 2020, she and a lawyer were attacked in the hotel they were staying at by up to a dozen perpetrators.

Initiated investigation

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the attack as “a very serious attack that requires vigorous action” by law enforcement agencies, and said President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the incident.

Chechnya’s leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, who has previously called Milashin a “terrorist”, said regional authorities have launched an investigation and will track down the attackers.
