It must be said that the European market is quite troublesome for the Meta company. It’s just been revealed that Meta’s new Twitter alternative, Threads, won’t be able to launch in Europe just yet due to privacy concerns. Another bad news for Mark Zuckerberg’s company is that Meta will have to restrict the display of personalized ads to users in the European Union (EU).
An EU court has ruled that Facebook’s Meta platform will have to get users’ permission before serving at least some personalized ads. “Meta” has not yet commented on this court decision.

Significantly, Meta previously appealed the EU’s decision earlier this year to fine the company EUR 390 million for requiring Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users to accept personalized ads in order to use these platforms. The EU court found that Meta violated the General Data Protection Regulation in this way by illegally requiring users to provide ad targeting data in order to use these apps.
The Irish Data Protection Commission said at the time that the way Meta sought permission to use user data was illegal. More specifically, when the user registers on Instagram or Facebook, he is asked to agree to the terms of the platform, which also includes the provision of data for personalized advertising. Therefore, in order to use these apps at all, the user had no choice but to agree to such data processing and company policies.
