Jakarta –
In July there is a full moon or supermoon which is often called Full Buck Moon aka Deer Full Moon. This phenomenon graces the sky on July 3, 2023. What is a Full Buck Moon?
A deer full moon, of course, doesn’t mean the Moon appears to have antlers like a deer. This naming, the same as the names of other full moon events in the western world, comes from the American farmer’s calendar, namely The Farmer’s Almanac.
Quoting from the BRIN Science and Space Education page, the names of full moons in Western countries are usually adjusted to their agricultural seasons. For example, the June full moon is often called the Strawberry Full Moon because it coincides with the strawberry harvest season.
While naming Full Buck Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs in the month of July. This name comes from the custom that generally in this month the rangers and farmers see the male deer grow new hair antlers. Male deer in English are called ‘buck’ so the July full moon is called the Full Buck Moon.
This mention is solely to mark the season and animal behavior that occurs in certain seasons in the environment of the Indian tribes in North America. Full Buck Moon also means that this full moon is the right time to hunt male deer whose antlers are just growing.
The Full Buck Moon phenomenon usually occurs once a year and refers to when the moon is in its full moon phase and appears fully bright in the night sky. This full moon can be seen clearly by the human eye and provides a beautiful sight. In July, the Full Buck Moon is also often associated with early summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
