US Central Command Accuses Russian Pilots of Unsafe Behavior During Interactions with US Drones in Syria

On Wednesday, US Central Command accused Russian pilots of engaging in unsafe behavior while interacting with US drones that were carrying out missions against ISIS in Syria.

Air Force Commander at Central Command, Lieutenant General Alex Grinkowitz said statement “Earlier in the day at approximately 10:40 am, Russian military aircraft engaged in unsafe and unprofessional behavior while interacting with US aircraft in Syria.”

The statement added that three American MQ-9 drones were carrying out a mission against ISIS targets, when three Russian fighter jets began harassing them.

“Against established standards and protocols, Russian aircraft dropped multiple parachute flares in front of the drones, forcing our aircraft to perform evasive maneuvers,” the statement added. The operator’s ability to operate the aircraft safely.

And the US Air Force published a tweet attached to a video of the Russian air movements.

“These events are yet another example of unprofessional and unsafe actions by the Russian Air Force operating in Syria, which threaten the safety of both US and Russian forces,” General Grynkewich said.

Grinkowitz urged Russian forces in Syria to stop this “reckless behavior” and adhere to the standards of conduct expected of a professional air force so that “we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS.”

Last April, two Russian warplanes headed to intercept an American “Reaper MQ-9” march in the Black Sea, which crashed in the sea. The incident caused tension between Washington and Moscow.

This type of accident between Russian and Western planes has increased in recent months, over the Black Sea, as well as over the Baltic Sea, against the background of the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier this month, the British Air Force intercepted three Russian Air Force planes flying near NATO airspace, according to the British newspaper.

And at the end of May, Moscow announced the interception of 4 US strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea in two different incidents within a week.

Russian planes were also sent to intercept French, German and Polish planes.
