The rocket was launched from the European Space Agency’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. It launched a French military communications satellite and a German communications satellite.
“Ariane 5” was considered one of the most technically reliable rockets, although in 1996 it exploded during its first flight. The rocket explosion happened only once more – in 2002.

In 2021, Ariane 5 delivered the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope, which was jointly built by the European Space Agency, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Canadian Space Agency.
“Ariane 5” will be replaced by the new rocket “Ariane 6”, the first flight of which is planned this year.
On behalf of the European Space Agency, Ariane rockets are designed by the Airbus company, while their production and launch are provided by the French company Arianespace.
