Indonesia Fixed Broadband Network Report: Biznet Leads in Download Speed, First Media Excels in Video

KOMPAS.com – Global mobile network and experience research institute, OpenSignal, published a report on the experience of fixed broadband networks in Indonesia.

The report is entitled “Indonesia, Fixed Broadband Experience, June 2023”.

The report focused on the experiences of residents on the island of Java and five major cities in Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Bekasi and Medan.

The indicators of this research are broadband download speed, highest download speed, upload speed, and video experience.

The results of OpenSignal’s research found that the highest broadband download speed in Java was occupied by Biznet, with the average speed breakdown as follows:

Biznet: 26,9 Mbps (megabyte per second)
First Media: 26,1 Mbps
MyRepublic: 20,7 Mbps
Indihome: 18,6 Mbps

Meanwhile, the highest download speed is still dominated by Biznet with the following average speeds:

Biznet: 100 Mbps
First Media: 93,1 Mbps
My Republic: 82,8 Mbps
IndiHome: 52,5 Mbps

As for the average upload speed, the order is as follows:

Biznet: 18,4 Mbps
My Republic: 13,8 Mbps
First Media: 7,2 Mbps
IndiHome: 6,6 Mbps

OpenSignal notes that Biznet and First Media are fixed broadband operators that are capable of surpassing other competitors with significant differences.

“Users of both services have an average download speed which statistically is between 26.1-26.9 Mbps. This speed is 25.9-29.7 percent faster than My Republic and 40.5-44.7 percent from IndiHome,” wrote Open Signal.

First Media excels in video

However, when talking about the video viewing experience and upload speed, the order of the fixed broadband operators above has changed

The experience of watching videos is occupied by First Media with 66.9 points, followed by My Republic with 65.3 points which is in second place. Biznet is in third place with 64 points, and Indihome with 60.9 points.

Despite the differences and ranking changes in several indicators, OpenSignal says that all four service providers are unanimously ranked Good at a score of 58–68.

This figure indicates that the average user can still watch videos with a resolution of 720 pixels or higher with minimal loading times and lag.

5 major cities of Indonesia

Overall, Jakarta, Bekasi, Bandung, and Surabaya have download speeds that are dominated by Biznet.

The average download speed is around 28.1 Mbps to 37 Mbps. Unlike the other four cities, the highest download speed in Medan is IndiHome at 24.3 Mbps.

Then for the highest download speed, Jakarta, Bekasi, Bandung, and Surabaya are again dominated by Biznet.

Meanwhile, Medan is dominated by CBN and MyRepublc with the highest download speeds of 67.1 Mbps and 64.4 Mbps respectively.

The conclusion is that Biznet, First Media, and My Republic are services that quite dominate the five big cities in Indonesia.

All three have quite high download and download speeds compared to other operator services, except for Medan, which is dominated by Indihome and My Republic.
